Indiana Dunes National Park
September 3-4, 2019 - Northern Indiana
2.8 mi  /  241 ft
Indiana Dunes is the country's newest national park, so designated just this past February. It's relatively close to Isle Royale in Michigan, which I also hadn't yet been to, so it made sense to bundle them together and make Midwest trip of it. It's been a National Lakeshore since the 1960's, and so has been a protected area for awhile. It's basically the accumulation of sand from eons of Lake Michigan delivering it up to its southern shores. It had some really nice beaches that were indistinguishable from beaches you'd see on the ocean. Also, the view of downtown Chicago across the lake was very cool.
