Even though I had "already" hit all the national parks in the lower 48 states, they have this annoying habit of continuing to create them and ruining my accomplishment. :) There are now 2 new ones, one of which is White Sands National Park in New Mexico, upgraded from a national monument. The pure white sand dunes are made of gypsum and create a striking effect. I hiked (ran, more accurately) the 5 mile Alkali Trail that takes you out into the heart of the dunes. Very pretty and surreal. If I'd known how close I was to the Trinity site I would tried to venture that way as well. Oh well, next time!
