The lower section had lots of techy drops. We were able to ride most, but a few were a little bit too dramatic, like this one. Too old to get injured! Off the bike we go. :)

A sort of "spine" that we rode across. This area of the trail I thought was reminiscent of Thunder Mountain down by Bryce.

As we descended it started to get more deserty and red rocky. There was threat of rain throughout the ride, but fortunately we experienced hardly a drop.

I think we saw dirt of every color in the rainbow this day. I really liked the contrast of the red dirt with the green plants for a lot of the ride.

Lots of nice views to the east down in the valley where Richfield is.

The trail started out nice and flowy with lots of little jumps and drops...and the best part, virtually no switchbacks! I loved that.

I don't know what the top is like other times of the year, but this day (mid-May) it was supper green and pretty, with lots of nice yellow and purple wildflowers.

It was a bit chilly on top so we donned our jackets. Luckily the unloading process was pretty efficient, so we were soon on our way.

It was about an hour-long ride to the top. Very bumpy road and tight quarters...and the van didn't exactly have the best air circulation, so it was a pretty stuffy ride. Still worth it though!

We hired a shuttle placed called Ride Richfield to take us up. This was the van we piled into...eleven riders and eleven bikes on the roof. The rack they used was pretty ingenious.

I like this shot...it nicely captures in one still what the hike up to the waterfall was all about.

There was this random black cat running around the area...looking for food I think. Not sure if it's a permanent resident or not.

This waterfall and area really was amazing...made slightly less amazing, however, by the hordes of instagram idiots trying to get a pic...to...convince people their life is better than it really is? I don't know.

When I went to Maui I thought I'd never been in a bamboo forest before, but since I did this same route in 2002, clearly I had been. :)

Since I'd done this route before I wanted to continue along the coastal trail for the entire length...but that permit is very hard to get, you have to apply months and months in advance. So inland toward the awesome waterfall I went!

The last time I did this trail it was in the winter and this beach did not exist...it was just ocean all the way up to the rocks. The difference between summer and winter, I guess.

Such a lush, beautiful place. I can see why it's hard tog get a permit to hike here, especially for the whole length of the trail.

Been all over in this mine. Never did rope drop anywhere in it, but explored some cool different sections. Is it still a gate, or is it now concrete? It can be dangerous if you're not careful. We went up the ladder and ended up coming out the upper entrance, then on up to the top of the peak.

Hey Rod. I'm not actually sure of the current state of the entrances. I haven't been back since we did this 11 years ago. It wouldn't surprise me if they'd sealed it up with concrete, though.

This parking area had 2-3 times as many cars when we came back to pick up Blubaru! Popular weekend for this float. Luckily, we rarely crossed paths with other boaters.

Finally back to the "Blubaru" and the end of the route. We were happy to see all was in order (as was Dave's truck back at the start). Great trip!

As we got closer to the end of our route in Parunuweap (where we exited the canyon) it started to become more and more deep/dramatic and resemble its cousin the Zion Narrows.

Once you've climbed up, you then have to enter the small opening and descend a series of drops...handing off backpacks and trekking poles as you go.

This video was supposed to be landscape orientation, but I guess I had my phone angled weird when I started it. anyway, this shows the logjam waterfall crux, and why we not able/willing to downclimb it. We took the sneaker route up and to the left, instead.
